The Old Man of the North is a new, free online magazine for the hills and wild places of the British Isles. The Old Man is a hill-walker, lover of wild places, sometime rescue volunteer and writer with a keen interest in the landscapes, wildlife, history and folklore of our wild places and hills.
The 'Latest' page will keep you updated at a glance on new features, news, walks and stories in the pages of the magazine.
The 'News' page will feature the latest news and events from the outdoor world, from the hills and the wildlands and there will be a mountain rescue news and the latest on upcoming outdoor events.
The 'Walking and Gear' page will feature outstanding walks from around the British Isles, from the Northern Isles to the south coast and from the eastern shores to the Western Isles. The 'Skills in the Hills' sub-page will bring you hints, tips and advice on getting the most from your days out whilst the 'Gear' sub-page will keep you up to date on the latest hill-walking and outdoor clothing and kit.
The 'Wildlife' page, of course, brings you wildlife stories, information on the natural world and conservation news and issues.
'History and Folklore' has three pages within it, with features on the historic and archaeological wonders you'll find in out wild lands, a sub-page dedicated to place-names and the surprising depth of history and heritage they contain. Finally there's a sub-page for folklore, from interesting little snippets about plants, folk customs and the people of the hills, to full-blown creepy tales of fantastic beasts and things that go bump in the bothy.
The 'Art' page will not only features paintings and photography from our wild lands but will look at sculptures in the hills, books, music and anything else of a artistic interest relating to the outdoors, walking and nature.
Lastly there is a contact page and contact links throughout the magazine encouraging you to send in your own news, walks, stories, experiences and anything else you might like to share.
